As I may have commented elsewhere, you have to keep in mind the fact that our government was designed by guys who had (for some very good reasons) an overwhelming distrust of government. It is intentionally ineffective, riddled with inefficiency, and prone to miss the whole point on almost any topic. It only coalesces in times of clear and imminent existential threat. It's not going to make rational, objective decisions about climate extinction and alternative energy until it has no other choice. Assuming it's not too late then, the speed and efficiency of our response will make your head spin - but it's going to require something huge (the total collapse of agricultural production in California, for example) before the dial is moved in a meaningful way.

haha, much to my humiliation, I learned that far from being clever and edgy and prescient, my children have been familiar with the FSM for YEARS!

Still, I welcome my new noodly overlord, even though it has been proven I am pathetically behind the curve.

Paul Gilding http://paulgilding.com/cockatoo-chronicles/cc20091008climategiantawakes.html

and my comment:China’s one-child policy was brutal but prescient. I’m not advocating dictatorship, but they do have a ruthless was of getting things done. The so-called democracy of America is ineffectual and cannot deliver real change, so far. I am still hopeful and giving Obama the benefit of the doubt, especially considering the multiple disasters he inherited upon taking office.

But the American public is dominated by Deniers and Ignorers. Perhaps it will be that the USA is eclipsed, marginalized and impoverished as China rises and takes the lead in true clean energy progress.

Whatever. I for one welcome our new Green Masters – or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, whichever I must submit to first!

I think you are missing the point of my post. If we (and Europe, and China, and Japan and . . . ) deploy a "free energy" based infrastructure by, say, 2015, what happens to Iran and Saudia Arabia and Venezuela and the other oil producing countries? How much more Tupperware will the world need in 2016? Iran's economy will revert to exporting area rugs and pistachio nuts. After they pay for the essentials, they won't have enough left over to sweep their streets and run a free circus. In other words, solving climate extinction solves a big bunch of other problems, not the least of which are many of the major perceived national security threats we currently face.

The problem is, there is no alternative to the UN. The UN is the agency that has spearheaded international analysis of climate change science.

Let's think about climate change refugees for a minute. Forget about national borders. How many people in Indiana and Ohio are going to open their doors to the US citizens from Texas, Florida, Louisiana, California and Arizona who have no homes thanks to flooding, hurricanes and drought? Ha ha! Not many, I suspect.

I wouldn't trust the UN to provide competent crossing guards for a neighborhood elementary school, let alone security analysis for nuclear proliferation. If we hadn't told Mohamed el Kabong that the Iranians had a second enrichment site, he'd still be walking around with the bag they pulled over his head tied neatly under his chin.

I'm not sure if your math is accurate. Was Jim Traficant a millionaire before being elected to Congress? William Jefferson? There are a lot of elected officials who seem to hit the Trifecta AFTER they get into office - and I'm sure there's a correlation between personal net worth and campaign finance contributions - but there still seems to be plenty of opportunity for a common criminal to hold a Congressional office or even get a judicial appointment (like those dimwit Judges in Wilkes Barre who were on the payroll of the juvenile prison developers). This is why we need to keep Gitmo open. We need a place to stash the real enemy combatants.

AND I forgot to mention that the odds of being elected to federal office if you're not at least a millionaire or multi-millionaire are somewhere between zilch and none.

SOME democracy!

The Birthers would argue that the US should be excluded because el Presidente isn't a natural born citizen - so, whether you're a left wing loon or a right wing loon, we don't qualify. That works for me! And I could easily get down with the idea of la France cleaning up the mess in Somalia, too!

<em>Allons enfants de la Patrie,
